EXODUS: A MUSIC AND STORYTELLING PERFORMANCE (working title)

The Chai For All Ensemble are working on a performance of Jewish music and stories; some of them Arabic and Sephardic, and Middle Eastern music and stories; some of them Jewish and Palestinian. We hope our show will express the beauty of the intricately interconnected cultural and human reality.

YIDDISH SONG / MIDDLE EASTERN SOUNDS

Yalla! An infectiously entertaining mish-mosh of powerful Yiddish music hall songs and whirling klezmer and Middle Eastern dance tunes.

Marianna Moralis' impassioned vocals lead the party, driving fabulous New York Yiddish theatre songs, old world Yiddish folk songs, and cheerful singalongs; David Mowat (trumpet), Knud Stüwe (guitar) and Simon Leach / Brendan Hockey (percussion) propel the joyous and sizzling arrangements with their impressive playing and enormous sense of fun.

With fantastic music, brilliant audience rapport and more than a touch of goodtime showbiz, this is a set guaranteed to raise the spirits. Sababa!

SOUND IS RESISTANCE

During their tour of Palestine in 2018, the Chai For All Ensemble heard a story about the wheat variety 'Abu Samra', which Zaid Hilal and Hind Hilal turned into a lovely song, performed during our UK tour of ‘Our Homeland Lives in Us: Longing, Belonging & Palestine’. In April 2019 Chai For All Ensemble members Katie Stevens, David Mowat and Michael Loader, with Peter Churchill of the Bonfire Radicals, returned to listen to many more Palestinian stories, which were used to inspire our ensemble show ‘Sound is Resistance: Stories of Palestine in Music and Song’.
