Cotham Club Jam

 —  —

Cotham Club, Cotham Parish Church, Cotham Road, Bristol BS6 6DR

FUNDRAISER FOR MEDICAL AID FOR PALESTINIANS/EDWARD SAID NATIONAL CONSERVATOIRE OF MUSIC

A superb jam session-cum-performance by an eclectic line-up of Bristol musicians united by a shared humanity; raising funds to provide immediate medical aid in Palestine and give hope to bereaved and traumatised children.

Medical Aid For Palestinians (MAP) has launched an unprecedented emergency response amid growing critical health needs in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, resulting from the current escalation of violence and Israel's ongoing bombardment and complete siege on Gaza. The conservatory team in Gaza of the Edward Said National Conservatoire Of Music (ESNCM) has commenced a programme of activities with Palestinian children, despite the deteriorating conditions, in order to create spaces of hope within the refugee camps.

In light of this desperate humanitarian crisis, Cotham Club, in collaboration with the Palestine Museum And Cultural Centre Bristol, hosts a very special live music event to raise funds for MAP and ESNCM.

Cotham Club Jam aims to replicate the thrills, informality and vibe of a fiery after-hours jam session-cum-performance. Some of Cotham Club's best loved performers, alongside special guests and new generation artists, put their music where their values are, with a dynamic and stylistically diverse night of world-class jazz, great global sounds, and radical genre fusions. Music with the gloves off, immediate and unpredictable.

Vital music for vital medicine (of the body, of the soul).

Performers confirmed to date include: Alphonse Daudet Touna (Hélélé), Bunja Conteh, Liz Conteh, Chandra Moon, Terry Payne and Lucy Marley (AfroWelsh Connection), Ben Badoo (Baraka), Colin Smith (The Regz), Jonathan Segar and Chris Langton (Tagna Groove), Michael Loader (Wild Words), Ali Elmubarak (Nabra), Pete Warner (The Globo Collective), Fabio Ferri (Fabio Ferri Quintet), and Marianna Moralis, Simon Leach and David Mowat (Chai For All). More artists to be announced.

THE CAUSE Deniece Dixon, the determined and beloved co-owner of Café Conscious on Avonvale Road in Barton Hill, wants to turn it into a fully-fledged community café, serving the people of the neighbourhood. It’s been a vegan organic take-away and sit down Jamaican Restaurant since it opened ten years ago and Wayne, Deniece’s husband, will carry on this side of the business most evenings. Deniece has gained a wonderful reputation for the work she’s already started. She’s won a Thankyou Award from Up Our Street for her work with children with special needs. There were the free meals she and friends prepared during the pandemic. School students in alternative provision help serve meals and learn hospitality skills. Coffee Pot the St Luke’s coffee morning loves coming every week. Members of Key Ring who have special needs and live independently locally enjoy this coffee morning too, as well as the quizzes, feasts and craft sessions Deniece hosts. The list could go on and on. Deniece is brimming over with ideas for the future. In liaison with the Barton Hill History Group she wants to kit out the café with Barton Hill historical photos alongside photos of today. With her friend Gabi, another activist, she wants to respond to the looming energy bills crisis with a ‘batch cooking’ teaching project to cut back on meal costs. There’ll be craft stalls, candle making and Gabi who has her own gritty story to tell, will run workshops on human trafficking and domestic violence victim support. Putting these ideas into practice is daunting, alongside raising her own family and holding down a special needs advisory consultancy with the council. Deniece is looking especially to replace the extractor fan, the single biggest item by far. “It’s about £11,000.” Deniece says with a smile, not missing a beat. Deniece will have a gofundme page, quizzes and more. This is the start; the community, who have felt her love and seen her vision unfold through thick and thin these past ten years are right behind her.

Mazl & Brokhe: Yiddish Song

 —  —

The Shakespeare, Totterdown, 1 Henry Street, Totterdown, Bristol BS3 4UD

Imagine: it's the late 1950's in London and there's an adventurous Jewish dance band who mix Yiddish songs and klezmer with musical influences that have been drifting in from the US - the great songs of the American Yiddish theatre - and from the Argentine dramatic tango styles. That's the cheerful conceit behind Chai For All's 'Mazl & Brokhe: Yiddish Song' set.

Radio Banska

A jazz/world-music quintet, Radio Banska has worked across the southwest since 2012, mostly on the arts centre and jazz festival circuit.

After the sad passing of founding violinist Nina Trott, the band experimented with different line ups, including Bristol sax man Craig Crofton - but is currently working with virtuoso accordionist Mirek Salmon, a perfect fit for the mesmerising, original compositions.

A highly melodic, jazz infused blend of Levantine mystery, dark Balkan passion and Latin rhythms.

“ ... an extraordinarily powerful band – a kind of Levantine zeppelin ... “

“ ... a delight of fusion jazz - often surreal, always hard driving ... “
